All about the fascinating universe of Stargate!

Stargate Universe Moving to Monday Starting March 7th

According to a tweet by Syfy’s Craig Engler, the final episodes of Stargate Universe are going to air on Monday nights at 9PM Central / 10PM Eastern time beginning March 7th.

In a later tweet, he also mentions that this is a good time slot following a highly rated drama.

If I had to choose, I would have liked it to stay on Friday, since that’s when I tend to catch up with shows, but since I don’t get to choose, Monday sounds like a good move to me.

Good thing, that. Hand washing might have to be good enough for the crew of Destiny but it’s really not my thing. Then again, I don’t think we’ve ever seen how their clothes get cleaned…

Of course, that’s all beside the point.

Why choose Blu-ray instead of DVD for your season sets?

Blu-ray Disc Thumbnail Blu-ray discs pack a lot of punch onto each disc. Because a Blu-ray discs has a much larger capacity than a DVD, each disc can hold a lot more material. This translates into better image quality and better audio quality, along with more room for special features. Wikipedia has a good article about the Blu-ray format if you want more information.

The additional special features on a Blu-ray has become one of the major selling points for Blu-ray over DVD for TV fans. Most fans who are interested in a television show enough to buy the season sets are usually much more interested in what possible special features a season set will include. Traditionally, Blu-ray releases of a TV series do include more special features.

In the end, you won’t have to swap out discs as often to watch an entire series of episodes and this can be a great benefit to having Blu-ray instead of DVD if you like to watch a variety of episodes in random order. From one fan to another…this describes me. ;-)

Stargate Universe Canceled by Syfy

Syfy has canceled Stargate Universe, by way of twitter. While I’m not that surprised that SGU has been axed, I am surprised that apparently this twitter update by Craig Engler announced the cancellation not only to the world, but to the cast too. Naughty, naughty, Syfy…

A few of the places where you can go to read more:

GateWorld: Syfy cancels Stargate Universe after two seasons

Deadline.com: Syfy Cancels ‘Stargate Universe’ (Plenty of juicy comments to read too, if you find that kind of thing fun. I do. Sometimes. Maybe I shouldn’t admit that.)

TVSquad.com: Syfy Cancels ‘Stargate Universe’

All in all, I’m sad, for the simple reason that TV will be less interesting without new Stargate episodes airing. However, I do have reruns to keep me happy. 17 seasons worth of episodes between SG-1, SGA, and SGU. Although, I freely admit SGU isn’t going to get much of my rerun attention, with the notable exception of a few spectacular episodes, such as Time, a true wonder in the midst of a lot of middle of the road episodes from season one.

December SGU Rumors

So I’ve been hearing rumors that Robert Carlyle, aka Dr. Rush, might be looking for a way off the show. I can’t remember where I heard this, and like I said, it is just a rumor as far as I know, but it got me thinking about what I would think of Stargate Universe without Dr. Rush.

Let’s just say, the show would not be the same. Dr. Rush is the single most intriguing character on SGU at the moment, in my opinion, and the show would be hurt terribly if his character left.

Although I think some of the more recent plot devices, including the use of the imaginary people who talk to him, haven’t done his character any favors, I still believe Dr. Rush is the best character on the show. His loyalties are deliberately ambiguous. He was never set up to be the hero, and yet, he’s actually shown some interesting tendencies in that direction. His secret agenda, whatever it might ultimately turn out to be, seems to be well motivated–although I can’t say for sure until I find out what it is!

At any rate, Dr. Rush’s departure could kill the show, I believe, so I seriously hope this is just a rumor that turns out to be false.

Anyone agree or disagree? Feel free to share!

SGU Season 2 to Date

So, I was told to expect season 2 to be better than season 1, but I hate to say that I’m not seeing it. SGU isn’t a terrible show, and it’s nice to have something to watch in the Stargate “Universe” that’s still on TV. However, I’m worried about the series. Here’s why. It’s okay if you disagree with me, because we’re all entitled to our own opinions and preferences for TV viewing, but I AM a fan. I just have a few issues with the show. Issues I believe could be addressed to make the show better.

I have a problem with shows that don’t give us heroes. I mean, even BSG, which SGU seems to be seriously attempting to emulate in tone and style, had heroes in the Adamas and Helo and Sharon.

SGU has not yet given any of the lead characters enough redeeming qualities to make me really root for them, or miss them if they were to die.

Realism can only go so far in a fictional TV show, simply because if I wanted reality I wouldn’t be watching FICTION.

Giving characters tough decisions is a great move, but if he or she is going to be someone I’m going to spend hours watch, they’re going to have to make better decisions than I might make, realistic or not.

Also, I enjoy the love triangles, up to a point. The one thing I can’t stand is going back and forth between lovers, and I think the writer’s have done good with the Chloe storyline, because so far, she seems loyal to Matt while not leading Eli on.

Young on the other hand, isn’t worthy of leading anyone on Destiny. I enjoyed the moments we were given in this week’s episode (Trial and Error) but I don’t think it was enough to overcome the serious, serious flaws his character has exhibited up to now.

Greer also had good moments in Trial and Error, and frankly, this is the most I’ve ever liked him. Usually, I can’t stand him and his sneers. He’s disquieting to have around because I could so easily picture him at some point breaking and shooting them all.

Overall, I’d say the season is on par with last season, but I wouldn’t say I’ve seen any improvements in character development. There has been a nice uptick in story development, but without good characters, good story isn’t going to help other people get into the show.

I miss the side of humor that came with SG-1 and Atlantis, because even their serious episodes always had something to keep me from wallowing in misery. Stargate Universe doesn’t have any of that and it’s so dark, emotionally speaking, that it’s hard to watch sometimes, in the same way I always found BSG hard to watch.
