Will Stargate Universe stay true to Stargate as we know it?

By Lynn

I was hanging around Joseph Mallozzi’s blog again when I found a comment he’d made when asked if Stargate Universe was going to be “a remake of Battlestar Galactica through the prism of Stargate?”

His answer excited me.

Given the premise of the series, it will be darker and more serialized than SG-1 or Atlantis. That said, there will still be plenty of opportunities for humor and the series will be firmly rooted in established Stargate mythology. Yes, the series will focus on survival, but it will also focus on exploration and adventure – and, by extension, the occasional alien encounter as well.

I feel a huge amount of relief to know that the humor I so love the Stargate series for is still going to be around, even though they’ve attempted to update the series for a younger audience. I hate to tell them, but as a representative of the fans of Stargate, I’m not getting any younger but I am ready for something fresh and new, but which stays true to established Stargate mythology. Maybe they’ll stay away from the ascended beings for a while, though. That’s still one of my most hated plot directions Stargate SG-1 ever took.

Personally, I can already see the modernization attempts in the new font they’re using for the logo. Very clean, very cool, and I love it.

I do have hopes that Stargate Universe will stay true to Stargate as I know it, but I also can’t wait to see what new things the writers, producers, directors, and characters will bring to the show.

What hopes do you have?

I grew up on SG1, and I really loved it. But Battlestar Galactica? No way! Stagate is unique, it doesn’t need BG reference…

Sorry I really dislike Stargate Universe, lame story lines, stupid character interactions, and stories about lesbians, come on! They tried to copy Battlestar Galactica but failed miserably.

I admit the Stargate Universe series has been slow to start off strong. The series has some problems that I’m hoping get worked out soon. However, I think Time really showed that Stargate Universe has it in it to be a fabulous sci-fi tv show if the SGU developers can get a better balance between the action, adventure, and relationship aspects of the series.

How can anyone believe that following the Space Soap Opera BattleStar Galactica would further the Stargate Brand. BS-G was the worst of SciFi and now Stargate is following it down the rabbit hole. Dear Stargate…you will never get the the approval of your narrow minded peers by producing a “drama” series. SG-U is a mid-afternoon soap opera and is getting worst. Stargate showed everyone that SciFi can have strong characters good writting…presented with great acting and solid directing. Now Stargate is becoming a joke with no characters, weak plots and holding up BS-G as a model. Stargate has “jumped the shark” please kill this turkey!

This is the worst science fiction in 20 years. Boring interpersonal discussion dominates the show. The acting is atrocious, the plots are non-existent, and the special effects non-existent. The worst episode of Babalyon 5 is 10 times better than the best episode of this show. All the actors look like Berkley street people and phoney effeminate actors. There is no enemy, no noble purpose, no….I must stop.

    Long Term Stargate Fan

I have been a Stargate fan since the beginning going back to the original movie. SG-1 while a bit different from the original was and continues to be a huge success. Atlantis was a great sequel to SG-1 and like most fans I miss it. SG-U is not of the same caliber as the originals and is far too dark with no real favorites coming forth. There seems to be no Jacks, Sams,Daniels, Teal’c, etc. Some of the SG-U characters might emerge as fan favorites but as yet have not. The constant flash-backs or flash-forwards make no sense nor do the presumed conferences with Jack despite the fact that no communications exist.
Maybe during one of those conferences, they could mention that they are lost. Despite what we would like it to be, the show far more closely resembles Battlestar Gallactica than Stargate and that I find unappealing. If the show doesn’t make it many long term fans will be disappointed

Come on SyFy lighten up a bit and make the show more like the the original and stop trying to be
    cutting edge.
